Real Estate Licensing Guide

Step 1 — Confirm Eligibility

You must:

  • Be at least 18 years old
  • Be legally authorized to work in the United States
  • Meet basic education requirements (high school diploma or equivalent)

Step 2 — Complete Pre-Licensing Education

Complete 60 hours of Arkansas Real Estate Commission–approved pre-licensing education.
At least 30 hours must cover real estate principles. Courses may be taken online or in person through approved providers. You will receive a certificate of completion.

Step 3 — Submit Application to the Arkansas Real Estate Commission

Submit the salesperson examination application to the Arkansas Real Estate Commission.
You will need to include:

  • Proof of pre-licensing education (or proof of enrollment)
  • Required application fee
  • Identification and personal information

The application must be submitted before completing fingerprinting.

Step 4 — Complete Fingerprinting and Background Check

After submitting your application, follow the instructions provided to complete electronic fingerprinting.
A state and federal criminal background check will be conducted. Approval is required before you may test.

Step 5 — Receive Examination Eligibility

Once your application, education, and background check are approved, you will receive authorization to take the licensing exam.

Step 6 — Pass the Real Estate Licensing Exam

Schedule and take the Arkansas real estate exam.
The exam includes:

  • A national portion
  • A state-specific portion

A minimum passing score of 70 percent is required on each section.

Step 7 — Affiliate with a Licensed Broker

After passing the exam, you must choose a licensed Arkansas real estate broker.
Your broker will sponsor you and sign the required paperwork for license activation.

Step 8 — Activate Your License

Within 90 days of passing the exam:

  • Submit your exam results
  • Submit broker sponsorship documentation
  • Pay license activation and related fees

Failure to complete this step within the deadline may require retaking the exam.

Step 9 — Complete Post-Licensing Education

After licensure, complete 18 hours of post-licensing education within six months of your license issue date.

Ongoing Requirements

To keep your license active:

  • Complete the required continuing education each year
  • Renew your license according to the Arkansas renewal schedule
