Step 1: Meet Basic Eligibility Requirements
To obtain a Real Estate Sales Agent license in Maine, you must:
- Be at least 18 years old
- Have a high school diploma or equivalent
- Be a U.S. citizen or legally authorized to work
- Be of good moral character
Step 2: Complete Required Pre-Licensing Education
You must complete 55 hours of Maine-approved pre-licensing education through a Maine Real Estate Commission–approved provider.
Step 3: Pass the Maine Real Estate Exam
After completing your education, you must pass the Maine Real Estate Sales Agent Exam, which includes:
- National portion
- State-specific portion
The exam is administered by PSI Exams.
Step 4: Complete Criminal Background Check
You must complete a criminal background check as part of the licensing process.
Step 5: Find a Designated Broker
You must be sponsored by a licensed Maine designated broker who will supervise your work.
Step 6: Submit Your License Application
Submit your Sales Agent License Application to the Maine Real Estate Commission, including:
- Proof of education
- Exam pass results
- Background check documentation
- Designated broker information
- Required fees
Step 7: Receive Your License
Once approved, your Maine Real Estate Sales Agent license will be issued and activated under your designated broker.
Step 8: Complete Post-Licensing Education
Within your first two years of licensure, you must complete 21 hours of post-licensing education.
Step 9: Maintain Your License with Continuing Education
- Licenses are renewed every two years
- You must complete 21 hours of continuing education per renewal cycle, including mandatory core topics
