Real Estate Licensing Guide

Step 1: Meet Basic Eligibility Requirements

To obtain a Real Estate Salesperson license in Minnesota, you must:

  • Be at least 18 years old
  • Have a high school diploma or GED
  • Be a U.S. citizen or legally authorized to work
  • Be of good character and reputation

Step 2: Complete Required Pre-Licensing Education

You must complete 90 hours of Minnesota-approved real estate education through a Minnesota Department of Commerce–approved provider, including:

  • Course I (30 hours)
  • Course II (30 hours)
  • Course III (30 hours)

Step 3: Pass the Minnesota Real Estate Exam

After completing your education, you must pass the Minnesota Real Estate Salesperson Exam, which includes:

  • National portion
  • State-specific portion

The exam is administered by PSI Exams.

Step 4: Find a Sponsoring Broker

You must be sponsored by a licensed Minnesota real estate broker before applying for licensure.

Step 5: Submit Your License Application

Submit your Salesperson License Application to the Minnesota Department of Commerce, including:

  • Proof of education
  • Exam pass results
  • Sponsoring broker information
  • Required fees

Step 6: Complete Criminal Background Check

You must complete a criminal background check as part of the licensing process.

Step 7: Receive Your License

Once approved, your Minnesota Real Estate Salesperson license will be issued and activated under your sponsoring broker.

Step 8: Complete Post-Licensing Education

Within your first two years, you must complete Course IV (30 hours).

Step 9: Maintain Your License with Continuing Education

  • Licenses are renewed every two years
  • You must complete 30 hours of continuing education per renewal cycle, including mandatory annual modules
