Step 1: Meet Basic Eligibility Requirements
To obtain a Real Estate Salesperson license in New Jersey, you must:
- Be at least 18 years old
- Have a high school diploma or equivalent
- Be a U.S. citizen or legally authorized to work
- Be of good moral character
Step 2: Complete Required Pre-Licensing Education
You must complete 75 hours of New Jersey–approved real estate education through a New Jersey Real Estate Commission–approved provider.
Step 3: Pass the New Jersey Real Estate Exam
After completing your education, you must pass the New Jersey Real Estate Salesperson Exam, which includes:
- National portion
- State-specific portion
The exam is administered by PSI Exams.
Step 4: Complete Criminal Background Check
You must submit to a criminal history background check and fingerprinting.
Step 5: Find a Sponsoring Broker
You must be sponsored by a licensed New Jersey real estate broker before your license can be issued.
Step 6: Submit Your License Application
Submit your Salesperson License Application to the New Jersey Real Estate Commission, including:
- Proof of education
- Exam pass results
- Background check clearance
- Sponsoring broker information
- Required fees
Step 7: Receive Your License
Once approved, your New Jersey Real Estate Salesperson license will be issued and activated under your sponsoring broker.
Step 8: Maintain Your License with Continuing Education
- Licenses are renewed every two years
- You must complete 12 hours of continuing education per renewal cycle, including mandatory core topics
