Real Estate Licensing Guide

Step 1: Meet Basic Eligibility Requirements

To obtain a Real Estate Salesperson license in Ohio, you must:

  • Be at least 18 years old
  • Have a high school diploma or equivalent
  • Be a U.S. citizen or legally authorized to work
  • Be honest, truthful, and of good reputation

Step 2: Complete Required Pre-Licensing Education

You must complete 120 hours of Ohio-approved real estate education through an Ohio Division of Real Estate & Professional Licensing–approved provider, including:

  • 40 hours of Real Estate Principles & Practices
  • 40 hours of Ohio Real Estate Law
  • 40 hours of Real Estate Finance

Step 3: Pass the Ohio Real Estate Exam

After completing your education, you must pass the Ohio Real Estate Salesperson Exam, which includes:

  • National portion
  • State-specific portion

The exam is administered by PSI Exams.

Step 4: Complete Criminal Background Check

You must submit BCI and FBI background checks through approved WebCheck fingerprinting providers.

Step 5: Find a Sponsoring Broker

You must be sponsored by a licensed Ohio real estate broker who will supervise your work.

Step 6: Submit Your License Application

Submit your Salesperson License Application to the Ohio Division of Real Estate, including:

  • Proof of education
  • Exam pass results
  • Background check results
  • Sponsoring broker information
  • Required fees

Step 7: Receive Your License

Once approved, your Ohio Real Estate Salesperson license will be issued and activated under your sponsoring broker.

Step 8: Complete Post-Licensing Education

Within your first year of licensure, you must complete 20 hours of post-licensing education.

Step 9: Maintain Your License with Continuing Education

  • Licenses are renewed every three years
  • You must complete 30 hours of continuing education per renewal cycle, including mandatory core topics
